Broaching

Broaching

Broaching is a machining process used to remove material from a workpiece using a broach tool, which has multiple cutting teeth arranged in a progressive sequence. It is an efficient method for creating precise shapes, keyways, holes, and complex profiles in metal and other materials.

How Broaching Works :

  • A broach tool is pushed or pulled across the surface of a workpiece.
  • The teeth of the broach are arranged in stages, each removing a small amount of material.
  • The process is fast, precise, and ideal for high-volume production.

Types of Broaching Processes

Broaching is classified based on the direction of movement and tool design:

    A. Based on Direction of Motion
  • Linear Broaching : A broach tool is pushed or pulled across the surface of a workpiece.
  • Rotary Broaching : The tool rotates to create circular or hexagonal holes.
    B. Based on Machine Type
  • Internal Broaching : Used for cutting internal features like holes, keyways, or splines.
  • External Broaching : Used to shape the external surface, such as gears or flat surfaces.
    C. Based on Feed Mechanism
  • Push Broaching : The broach is pushed through the workpiece (used for short parts).
  • Pull Broaching : The broach is pulled through the workpiece (used for longer parts).
